Debate: Top 5 point guards

In light of Rondo's legendary play-off performance, Ramos' article (before aforementioned performance) and my high school quarterback pissing me the fuck off. Ramos and I will be arguing the top 5 point guards in the NBA.

Marcus Top 5

1. Chris Paul- He's been hurt I know, but when he plays there is nobody better. Finished second in the MVP in '08. At his best he puts up 22-11-5-2. Lead the league in steals per game 2 years in a row and lead in total steals for 3. Will probably go down as one of the best ever.

2. Derron Williams-He's been the interim leader of point guards in the absence of Paul. He's been playing very well in the play-offs this year although he's about to be blanked by Kobe. Better shooter but he cannot play defense as well as CP3 can. It's disgraceful that it took him 5 seasons to become an all-star

3. Rajon Rondo- He's like the new Jason Kidd. He can do it all, find the open man, shut down the opposing point guard, grab boards. I know, he is not a very good jump-shooter. Just going to have to take the good with the bad, and there is a lot of good.

4. Steve Nash-Future Hall of Famer, without question. Looking at his regular season numbers you would say he's the same player as he was when he won the MVP, he's not. He isn't as quick or athletic as he used to be. Don't believe me? Compare his play-off numbers from this season and 2005-2007, and check out some of his MVP years on youtube. Trust me.

5. Derrick Rose- A rising star in Chicago. Became an all-star as a sophmore. He is very quick and can take it to the rim strong. He stepped in and assumed the role as Chicago's franchise player right out of the gate and has put up 20-6 leading them to consecutive play-off appearances. The first real superstar in Chicago since that other dude they used to have.



Honorable Mention- Chauncey Billups, Russell Westbrook, Jason Kidd.


Ramos Top 5
1.) Derron Williams- Call him the intermin best point guard if you want but there is no denying that as of right now Derron Williams is the best point guard. For the past couple of seasons i have said CP3 was by far the best point guard, but watching Williams this past season and in the playoffs has changed my mind. Williams destroyed the Nugguets and Chauncey Billups in the first round and has elevated his game to new heights this postseason. I need to see if CP3 can rebound fully from this knee injury, if he does than he will be atop again. As for the all-star game knock that is a poor argument. Dumbass fans vote on that, Williams was very deserving the past few seasons. Case and point the fans voted KG, and AI into the game this season.

2.) Chris Paul- In 45 games this season he averaged 19 and 10, the problem is have we already seen him reach his ceiling? Were all those talks of how he is the next Magic Johnson premature? Was his 2007 season in which he finished 2nd to Kobe in MVP voting the peak of cp3? Lets face it the Hornets have severely underachieved since that Conference Finals run. Paul has all the tools to go down as one of the best of all time, but the fact that he no longer has ligaments in his knees terrifies me.

3.) Steve Nash- There is not much that separates Nash from Rondo who is no.4 on my list. What makes me put Nash above Rondo right now is the little things. Despite being 36 years old Nash averaged 16.5 ppg and 11 apg. Nash is without question the better shooter than Rondo and his free throw percentage is almost 94%. Those things make me put him ahead of Rondo because in the waining moments of a game you would rather have the ball with Nash because he can create and shoot, his range is greater than Rondo and Nash is not a liability on the charity strike late in games.

4.) Rajon Rondo- Has emerged as one of the games best point guards, look no further than has 29-18-13 performance against the Cavs. Rondo is a above averaged rebounder however I'm not ready to say he is Jason Kidd just yet. The sky is the limit for Rondo and if he develops a jump shot than a MVP could be in his future. Side note lets see how Rondo performs when there is no more big 3, just raising the question how much is Rondo the product of playing with veterans who know how to control a team.

5.) Russell Westbrook- Everyone loves to say that OKC was only successful due to the season that Kevin Durant put together, but if you watched OKC this past season than you have to point to Russell Westbrook and say that he was equally important in the growth of this team. Great teams need great point guards in order to succeed. Westbrook had no sophomore slump averaging 16 points and 8 assists this past season. But it was in the playoffs where he really opened peoples eyes. In his very first postseason appearance Westbrook averaged 21-6-6 while getting 2 steals again. I think Rose is a very good point guard but watching him i dont see the same things that i see in Westbrook. Rose's jump shot is awful and despite being the teams best player can not have the ball in his hands late, where as Westbrook has improved his shot ten fold since his UCLA days and now is a com pent shooter who has the ability to knock down a jumper in the final minuets. If i were building a team and had to choose between the two i would pick Westbrook and not think twice.
